Divorce and Your Money: A Practical Guide for Splitting Assets Fairly
Financial guidance for divorce in San Dimas, Glendora, La Verne, and Claremont
Divorce is one of the hardest transitions a person can go through, and money decisions often get made when you're exhausted and under pressure. At Homestead Wealth Management, Jarret Rodriguez-Conklin, ChFC®, CIMA®, helps you slow down, understand what you own, and make choices that protect your future, not just settle today's paperwork.
Why "equal" isn't always "fair"
California is a community property state, which generally means assets and debts acquired during the marriage are split equally. But two assets with the same balance can be worth very different amounts to you once taxes, timing, and future growth are considered. A $200,000 retirement account and $200,000 of home equity are not the same thing.
What we help you think through
- Taking inventory. Retirement accounts, pensions, investment accounts, real estate, business interests, and debts.
- Retirement accounts and pensions. How dividing them works, including when a court order such as a QDRO is needed.
- The house. Whether keeping it makes sense, or whether it could strain your cash flow and leave you short on retirement savings.
- Taxes. The after-tax value of what you're receiving, not just the number on the statement.
- Cash flow. A realistic budget for life on one income, including support received or paid.
- Beneficiaries and estate documents. Updating them once the divorce is final.
- Social Security. If you were married 10 years or more, you may be eligible for benefits based on your former spouse's record.
Working alongside your attorney
We are not attorneys and don't give legal advice. We work alongside your family law attorney and tax professional so the financial side of your settlement is clear before you sign.
A fiduciary looking out for you
When we provide investment advisory services, we act as a fiduciary, which means we're required to put your interests first and be upfront about any conflicts of interest. During a divorce, having someone objective on your side matters.
